Men’s Basketball Stumbles Versus Fresno State, 61-51

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i men' basketball team lost its fifth straight game with a 61-51 setback to Fresno State Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 9-14 overall and 2-8 in the Western Athletic Conference.
 
The 'Bows lost despite a strong effort from senior wing Roderick Flemings who finished with 21 points and eight rebounds. However, the rest of the team struggled, including another tough night from beyond the arc. UH went just 2-of-14 on 3-pointers and 7-of-13 from the free throw line as the 'Bows finished with a season-low 51 points. The 'Bows also turned the ball over 19 times.
 
Fresno State had four players finish in double-digits, led by Mike Ladd's 18 points. Ladd finished with four 3-pointers as the Bulldogs finished with eight treys on the evening. Freshman center Greg Smith chipped in 16 points and six rebounds.
 
It was a close game throughout until Fresno State pulled away at the end. The Bulldogs buried five 3-pointers by the break to take a narrow 27-25 lead at halftime. The Rainbow Warriors surged ahead of the Bulldogs and took a 35-31 lead with 13:55 left in the game. But Fresno State scored nine unanswered to take a lead they would not relinquish.  Fresno State sealed the game at the line where they buried eight straight free throws and finished the game going 15-of-18 from the charity stripe.
 
UH now heads back on the road and will face Louisiana Tech on Saturday, Feb. 13. Tipoff is at 8:00 p.m. CT (4:00 p.m. HT).
