Women’s Water Polo Lands Sixth In Stanford Invite

STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 3 University of Hawai`i women's water polo team (6-4, 0-1 MPSF) finished sixth today at the Stanford Invitational. After No. 4 California upset UH 8-7, the Rainbow Wahine faced No. 6 Michigan and were defeated 11-10 in sudden death.

UH had a strong start against California, going on a 3-1 run in the first quarter. The Golden Bears dropped their deficit in the second, outscoring UH 2-1, but the Rainbow Wahine tightly held onto a 5-4 lead by halftime.

The Golden Bears climbed back in the third quarter, outscoring the Rainbow Wahine 3-2 bringing the match to a 6-6 tie. UH muscled in one goal in the final quarter but couldn't match up to California's two. Unable to take the lead back, the Rainbow Wahine were upset by the Golden Bears 8-7.

Seniors Dagmar Genee and Leonie Van Der Molen led UH with two goals each.

The Rainbow Wahine returned to the pool to face Michigan for fifth place. They got off to a comfortable 5-0 lead early at first quarter. The Wolverines broke through in the second quarter, outscoring the Rainbow Wahine 2-1 but UH held onto a 6-2 lead at the half.

Both teams tied with three goals each in the third quarter but UH still clutched a manageable 9-5 lead over Michigan. The Rainbow Wahine were shut down in the fourth quarter, unable to drive in any goals while Michigan slipped in four to tie the score 9-9 for overtime play.

UH pushed in one goal in the first overtime set, but Michigan answered back with one in the second, tying the game 10-10 for a sudden death round. The Rainbow Wahine were beat to the goal in sudden death, falling to the Wolverines for a 11-10 loss.

Leading UH again was Van Der Molen with three goals. Junior Carmen Eggens and Genee also added two goals each for the team.

The Rainbow Wahine will play their second Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match of the season on Feb. 25 against USC at 5:00 p.m. PT (3:00 p.m. HT) in Los Angeles, Calif.
