Men's Volleyball Continues Homestand With Two Matches Versus Alberta

Match Notes

HONOLULU –  The No. 8 University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team takes a break from Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action this week when it hosts a two-match exhibition series against Alberta, Friday, Feb. 12 and Saturday, Feb. 13. First serve for both matches is 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The result of the matches will not count toward UH's won-loss record.
 
The Warriors (6-5, 4-4 MPSF) dropped a pair of tight, four-set matches against then-No. 4 UCLA last week. On the first night, UH took an early 1-0 lead before the Bruins rallied for a 27-30, 30-25, 30-26, 30-25 victory. Jonas Umlauft led the Warriors with 16 kills while Steven Hunt added 15. In the rematch, UCLA jumped ahead 1-0 and held on to a 30-26, 23-30, 30-25, 30-28 win. Joshua Walker led the Warriors with a season-high 25 kills on .413 hitting. Umlauft had 16 kills and three service aces.
 
Alberta is the two-time defending champions of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport and finished their regular season with a 25-4 overall record and 14-4 mark in the Canada West Conference. The Golden Bears are ranked No. 3 in the CIS, which is the national governing body of universities in Canada. In league play, Thomas Jarmoc leads the team with a 3.26 kill average while Spencer Leiske is averaging 3.19 kills and 1.10 blocks per set.
 
The Warriors are in the midst of a five-week homestand having already hosted two-match series with UC Irvine and UCLA. UH is 4-3 at the Stan Sheriff Center this season.

Television Coverage: KFVE-TV (Ch. 5) will televise both matches live with Jim Leahey (play-by-play) and Sean Carney (color). Rebroadcast at 10:30 p.m. each night.

Promotions: Farmer's Insurance Hawaii, the match sponsor on Friday, will provide seat cushions to the first 1,000 fans to enter the arena. The Honolulu Advertiser is the game sponsor on Saturday and fans are reminded to register at the sports marketing table at Gate A for the chance to win great prizes during the promotional contest at intermission.
Tickets: Lower-level $11; Upper-level adult $8, Upper-level senior citizen $7; Upper-level youth (high school and under) and UH student $3; Lower-level UH Student $5.
Series Information: First meeting.
Series vs. Alberta: First meeting. The Warriors last faced a Canadian college during the regular season in 2004 when Manitoba participated in the Outrigger Invitational. UH also faced Laval in the 1997 and 2001 Outrigger Invitationals and hosted a two-match series with Alberta in 2001. Prior to that, UH hosted Calgary in 1991 and Manitoba in 1985 and '86.
