Women’s Basketball’s Late Rally Falls Short Against New Mexico State

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team made a second half rally against New Mexico State, but the Aggies held off the Rainbow Wahine for a 75-67 victory Wednesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

UH drops to 9-14 overall and 3-7 in Western Athletic Conference play with the loss. New Mexico State improves to 16-8 overall and 6-4 in conference play.

The Rainbow Wahine trailed by as many as 19 points in the first half, but cut the lead to 67-66, with 2:35 left in the game. The Aggies made some key free throws down the stretch to pull away for the win.

Five players scored in double figures for UH for the first time this season. Breanna Arbuckle scored 16 points, including 10 in the second half, to lead the way offensively.

Allie Patterson and Julita Bungaite each scored 11 points and Leilani Galdones and Keisha Kanekoa each scored 10 points.

As a team the Rainbow Wahine shot 47.3 percent for the game, their second highest shooting percentage on the season, including 53.8 percent shooting in the first half.

In the first half, New Mexico State shot 50 percent (16-32) from the field and went 5-for-10 from the 3-point line, leading to a 46-32 halftime lead over UH. The Rainbow Wahine shot 53.8 percent (14-26) from the field, but couldn't match the 3-pointers the Aggies hit.

UH had a balanced scoring attack over the first 20 minutes, with Galdones and Kanekoa each scoring seven points and Arbuckle adding six points. Patterson and Bungaite each had four points.

The Rainbow Wahine begin a three-game road trip following tonight's game, starting Saturday, Feb. 13 at Idaho. UH faces Nevada in Reno on Monday, Feb. 15 and finishes the trip Wednesday, Feb. 17 at San Jose State.
