SAN DIEGO, Calif. – For the second straight day the University of Hawaii women's tennis team battled hard against a ranked team while incurring the same disappointing result. The 48th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team won the doubles point and carried the momentum into singles play to defeat Hawai'i, 4-3, Thursday at the Aztec Tennis Center.
With the decision the Rainbow Wahine fell to 1-5 on the year with four of the losses coming to ranked teams. A day after a grueling four-hour marathon loss to No. 45
San Diego, UH had another protracted effort against a ranked squad, eventually falling to the No. 48 Aztecs.
UH lost the doubles point but rallied to take three singles matches. The Rainbow Wahine tied the match at 1-1 when
Alyssa Nafarrete downed Olivia Colman, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 6 and tied it again at 2-2 when
Sophie Kobuch picked up a victory at No. 2 over Julia Wais 6-1, 7-6 (5).
San Diego State, however, would not be denied as Sierra Ellison outlasted
Aglae Van den Bergh in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, and Julia Trunk provided the clinching win with her 1-6, 6-4, 4-0 ret., effort over
Barbara Pinterova at No. 1. With the result in hand, UH picked up the final point of the day when
Katarina Poljakova defeated Roxanne Ellison 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.
The Rainbow Wahine will return home briefly before again heading out for another four-match road trip through California. First up for UH will be San Francisco on Feb. 21. First serve is set for 1 p.m. PT (11:00 a.m. HT).
