HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team powered past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 9-0 in five innings; then fell to No. 10 Stanford, 2-0 on the second day of the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 0, Hawaii 9 (5 innings)

In her first collegiate action, freshman pitcher Kaia Parnaby, struck out 11 batters en route to a two-hit shut out. Parnaby, a southpaw from Australia, walked three and faced just 18 batters in her first appearance as a Rainbow Wahine.

The Rainbow Wahine racked up 11 hits—four of which were extra bases. The 'Bows were efficient on offense, leaving only three runners on base. The 'Bows posted two runs in the bottom of the third to break a scoreless tie. Senior catcher Katie Grimes led the inning off with a sharp single through the leftside of the infield. Then after a ground out, freshman centerfielder Kelly Majam launched a home run that sailed over the left-centerfield fence. It was her first collegiate hit for the Rainbow Wahine. The 'Bows took a 2-0 into the fourth inning.

In the fourth, UH tacked on two more runs. Senior first baseman Amanda Tauali'i led the inning off with a walk and senior shortstop Traci Yoshikawa followed with a bunt single back to the pitcher. Kanani Pu'u-Warrenthen executed a sacrifice bunt to push both runners into scoring position. Grimes knocked one run in on a base hit to left and the second run followed when Yoshikawa crossed the plate on a passed ball.

Hawai'i then posted five runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on the mercy rule. Alexandra Aguirre started the inning with a solid double that caromed off the left-centerfield fence. Melissa Gonzalez then took her place at second on a double of her own to the right-centerfield gap. After a strike out, Tauali'i drove in Gonzalez with a single to right and Yoshikawa kept things going with a sharp single up the middle. Then, after a fly out to right, Grimes hit the coup de gras, a three run home run over the left-centerfield fence to end the game.

No. 10 Stanford 2, Hawaii 0

Hawaii fell to No. 10 Stanford, 2-0 to end the second day of the Paradise Classic.

Stanford's pitcher, Ashley Chinn, stymied the 'Bows at the plate, tossing a one-hit shut-out. She gave up three walks while striking out 10 in seven innings of work.

The 'Bows countered with pitcher Stephanie Ricketts, who held the Cardinal at bay for the first three innings. But in the fourth, Stanford broke through on an RBI double by Maya Burns who drove in Shannon Koplitz. The score remained 1-0 until the seventh inning. Alissa Haber battled at the plate and got a single through the leftside of the infield and promptly stole second. Then, with two outs, Ricketts got Ashley Hansen to hit a fly to left, but the ball went in and out of the glove of the leftfielder and fell to the ground, allowing Haber to trot home for their second run.

Ricketts on the night gave up two runs with a walk and three strike outs.

Hawaii's lone hit was an infield single to first by Taualii.

Stanford finished the first two days of play in first with a 3-0 record. The other three teams were all tied at 1-2. The tie-breaker was least runs allowed, so Hawaii will be the No. 2 seed for tomorrow's bracket play. They will face the No. 3 seed, McNeese State at 10:00 am. No. 1 Stanford will play the fourth seed, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 12:00 p.m.
