Golden Bears Sweep Warrior Volleyball In Three

Box Score
Steven Hunt goes for a block.

HONOLULU—The No. 8-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team was swept in an exhibition match against the Alberta Golden Bears, 35-33, 30-26, 30-23, Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Bears' Spencer Leiske had a match-high 12 kills while Steven Hunt, a Toronto native, led the Warriors with 11 kills on hitting .381 and five blocks in just two sets. UH's Jonas Umlauft added 10 kills.

The Warriors and Golden Bears battled back and forth for much of Set 1. Hawai'i took its first lead at 25-24 after Hunt and Matt Rawson teamed for a block. Alberta retook the lead at 28-27 and the Warriors fought off two sets before regaining the lead at 31-30. UH squandered three set points and Alberta took the set after Hunt was blocked and Rawson hit long.

In Set 2, the Warriors reeled off four straight points with kills from Hunt, Umlauft, and Joshua Walker to take a 19-17 lead. The Bears tied the game at 19 and held on to a slight edge before a costly ball handling error by UH's Joseph Strotman, giving Alberta a 26-24 lead. The Bears responded with three straight points to end the set at 30-26.

With Hawai'i playing its reserves in Set 3, the Bears jumped out to a 7-3 lead and never looked back. The Warriors got within 26-21 but Alberta sided-out the rest of the way for the 30-23 win.

The results and statistics do not count toward UH's record.

The Warriors and Bears face off again on Saturday. First serve is at 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
