Warrior Volleyball Sweeps Alberta; Splits Exhibition Series

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team rebounded from a straight set loss to Alberta on Friday with a three-set win Saturday night in an exhibition match at the Stan Sheriff Center.
 
Jonas Umlauft led the Warriors with 22 kills and hit .500. Joshua Walker added 15 kills and three services aces while setter Nejc Zemljak had four aces and quarterbacked UH to a team hitting percentage of .418. Canadian Steven Hunt (Toronto) had 10 kills against his countrymen.
 
Thomas Jarmoc led Alberta (26-5) with 14 kills while Spencer Leiske chipped in with 13. The Golden Bears swept the Warriors on Friday.
 
In Set 1, the Warriors led 10-7 and went into the media timeout with a 15-11 advantage. After a pair of Walker service aces, UH led 20-15 and pushed its lead to as much as eight at 27-19. Umlauft ended it at 30-24 with his sixth kill of the set.
 
The Warriors carried the momentum into Set 2 taking an 11-8 lead. The Bears fought back and took their first lead at 14-13 and extended it to 22-18. UH caught Alberta a 26 after consecutive kills by Walker and Umlauft and had a swing at set point but Umlauft hit into the antenna. UH fought off three set points before taking a 32-31 lead. On its fifth set point, Brennon Dyer blocked Justin Merta giving UH the 37-35 win.  
 
With Walker at the service line, the Warriors jumped out to a 6-1 lead to open Set 3. They led 9-4 before the Bears scored seven of the next nine points to tie it at 11. The teams traded side-outs with the Warriors taking a slight advantage at 20-18. Alberta tied it again but the Warriors responded with a 5-1 run for a 25-21 lead. The Bears fought back and evened the set at 28 after stuffing Umlauft and Walker on consecutive plays however the Warriors ended it with a Walker kill and after Jarmoc's hitting error.
 
The Warriors will next host Hope International Thursday, Feb. 18 and Friday, Feb. 19 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
