HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team swept an overmatched Hope International, 30-13, 30-23, 30-21 Thursday, in a non-conference match at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The ninth-ranked Warriors (7-5) were led by freshman
Jonas Umlauft, who slammed a match-high 20 kills. Middle blocker
Matthew Rawson had a career-high 14 kills on 20 swings and
Joshua Walker added 11 kills. Senior
Ernie Vidinha started his second career match and first since 2007 and recorded four kills, 11 digs, and three blocks.
The NAIA's third-ranked Royals (5-4), which feature five players from Hawai'i, were led by Kaimi Guerreiro, a Kalaheo High School graduate, who tallied a team-high 11 kills.
UH stormed out to an 18-8 lead in Set 1 and led by as much as 19 before closing out the set 30-13. Umlauft had eight kills in the set and Rawson was a perfect 7-for-7.
The Royals battled in Set 2, trailing by one at 16-15 before the Warriors opened up a 21-16 lead with consecutive kills by Walker and a pair of Hope hitting errors. The Warriors traded side-outs with the Royals en route to the 30-23 victory.
It was all Hawai'i in Set 3. The Warriors jumped out to a 10-4 lead and were never threatened. UH extended it lead to 22-13 after a 7-2 run and finished off the Royals 30-21.
As a team, UH hit .374 and out-blocked HIU 11-3.
The Warriors and Royals meet again on Friday. First serve is 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
