HONOLULU –
Collin Bennett hit a walk-off single to right as the University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team (1-2) came from behind to defeat the No. 10 Oregon State Beavers (2-1) 5-4 in front of a crowd of 3,128 at Les Murakami Stadium Sunday.
Alex Capaul got the win for UH while Kevin Rhoderick picked up the loss for OSU.
Jeffrey Van Doornum went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI while
David Freitas was 2-for-3.
Kolten Wong added a 1-for-4 game with a double, a stolen base and a run with
Pi'ikea Kitamura going 1-for-3 with a run.
Oregon State started the scoring with single runs in the third and fourth innings, taking an early 2-0 lead.
Hawai'i responded in the fifth as
Greg Garcia drove in Kitamura to pull it back to 2-1. Van Doornum then doubled in a run to tie it in the bottom of the sixth before
Sean Montplaisir hit a RBI-single later in the inning, putting the 'Bows ahead 3-2.
The Beavers came back with a run in the top of the seventh before Stefan Romero hit a long home run to left in the eighth inning, giving OSU the lead back at 4-3.
The Rainbows then came up with their heroics in the bottom of the ninth.
Christian Johnson tied the score with a pinch-hit home run down the left line, hitting the foul pole just over the fence. Wong then hit a double down the right line and got to third on a wild pitch. Bennett then got the game-winner on a full count single up the middle, giving the 'Bows the exciting 5-4 victory.
The two teams will close out the series tomorrow at 5:05 p.m.
