Softball Continues Road Trip At Loyola Marymount

Game Notes

LOS ANGELES--The University of Hawai'i softball team (7-3) will play Loyola Marymount (2-3) in a mid-week match up in Los Angeles, Calif. before heading to the Cathedral City Classic (Feb. 25-27).The 'Bows went 4-1 this past weekend at the Louisville-Slugger Desert Classic, notching wins over Utah, UNLV, San Diego and Cal State Fullerton against one loss to No. 10 Georgia Tech. 

Offensively, the 'Bows have ratcheted up their power numbers, hitting a total of 26 home runs in just 10 games thus far. All nine position starters have belted at least one homer already this season. Both Amanda Tauali'i and Melissa Gonzalez lead UH with four round-trippers a piece. They are followed by Kelly Majam, Alex Aguirre, and Jenna Rodriguez who all have three each. The 'Bows have outscored their opponents 78-36 and as a team, UH is hitting a solid .332.

Reigning WAC Hitter of the Week, Majam, a redshirt freshman from Pine Valley, Calif., led the 'Bows this past weekend by hitting a WAC-best .750 (12-of-16) with seven RBI, a 1.313 slugging percentage and a .810 on-base percentage. She led the team in runs (10), hits (12), doubles (3) and walks (5). Majam had at least one hit in all five games and multiple hits in four games. She reached base safely in 17 of 21 plate appearances; hit 1.000 (5-for-5) with runners on; and was 9-for-9 in advancing runners.Overall, Majam, who has started every game, is now hitting .516.

Sophomore outfielder Aguirre has also posted solid stats in 2010. Currently, she is hitting .458 (11-for-24) with two doubles, three home runs, and eight runs scored. Senior first baseman Tauali'i has been very consistent at the plate and is hitting at a .414 clip. She is 12-for-29 on offense and is tied for the team lead in home runs (4) and RBI (10). Tauali'i also has two doubles and she leads the team with a nine-game hitting streak, the longest of her career. Junior third baseman Gonzalez, after missing much of last season due to injury, is having a breakout year. She is hitting .387 (12-for-31) with two doubles, four homers and nine RBI.

On the mound, freshman southpaw Kaia Parnaby was named the Verizon Wireless WAC Pitcher of the Week for going 3-0 this past weekend She enters the third week of play with a 5-0 record and 1.21 ERA. The Australian native, has completed all five games she appeared in and has two shut-outs under her belt. in 29 innings, she has walked 10 batters while fanning 39. Sophomore Stephanie Ricketts is 2-3 with a 3.73 ERA and four complete games. The preseason all-WAC pick has thrown 30.0 innings with 13 walks and 20 strike outs. Junior transfer Jenna Rodriguez has made one relief appearance this season and Gonzalez has yet to make her 2010 pitching debut. Also waiting in the wings are Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu and Sarah Robinson.

Coaches: Bob Coolen (Overall: 746-508-1; Hawai'i: 674-415-1) is currently in his 19th season at UH. Gary Ferrin is in his 16th year at LMU (528-391-1).
Series Information: UH leads the series 31-7, and have won the past five games. The last game time these two teams squared off was in the 2007 NCAA Regional Championship Game at UCLA on May 7. The 'Bows won that game, 9-0 in six innings.

Scouting Loyola Marymount
Loyola-Marymount enters the game with a 2-3 record after an idle week. In the opening week of the season, the Lions defeated Kent State and Long Beach State, but lost to UC Davis, Illinois, and UNLV at the Sportco Kick Off Classic in Las Vegas, Nev.

OFFENSE
Sam Fischer was named the PCSC Player of the Week after hitting .438 (7-for-16) with team highs hits (seven), runs (five) and RBI (five) at the Kick Off Classic. J.J. Hartung also started the season hot, hitting .389 (7-for-18) with three runs scored a team-leading two doubles, and four RBI. Although only starting three games, Priscilla Satete leads all Lions with a .500 average (4-for-8). She also has one scored one run, has one double, and two RBI.

PITCHING
The pitching staff has a combined 4.08 ERA. Cori Goodman has a 3.28 ERA and is 1-0 in 10.2 innings (two starts). She has tossed one complete game and has two walks and five strike outs. Melissa Dykema has seen the most action on the mound and is 1-2 in 2010 and has a 4.20 ERA in 16.2 innings. She leads the squad with nine strike outs. Molly Medeiros is 0-1 thus far in three appearances and Erica Grady has made one appearance.
