STANFORD, Calif. – The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team continued its four-match road trip through Northern California with a 7-0 loss to No. 11 Stanford Wednesday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine fell to 1-8 on the year with their sixth straight road loss.
Playing their third road match in as many days, the Rainbow Wahine faced a tall order in the No. 11 Cardinal who boast five nationally ranked singles players—Hilary Barte (13), Mallory Burdette (24), Lindsay Burdette (36), Stacey Tan (54) and Carolyn McVeigh (70) and a pair of ranked doubles teams—Barte and Lindsay Burdette (2) and Mallory Burdette and Tan (37).
Stanford played to its ranking, surrendering just five combined games in doubles and not dropping a single set in singles. The Cardinal (7-0) remained undefeated this year and extended its home winning streak to an amazing 156 matches in a row (126 in the regular season), recognized as the longest active home winning streak of any intercollegiate sport in NCAA Division I athletics. The last time the Cardinal lost a home match was on Feb. 27, 1999.
Meanwhile, six of UH's eight losses this year have come against ranked squads.
The Rainbow Wahine conclude their road trip with a match at Santa Clara on Friday, Feb. 26 at 2:00 p.m. PT (12:00 p.m. HT).
