SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team snapped a six-match losing streak with a 6-1 win over Santa Clara Thursday afternoon at the Degheri Tennis Center. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 2-8 after playing their eighth straight road match.
UH concluded its four-match swing through Northern California on a high note. After losses at San Francisco and ranked squads Sacramento State and Stanford on successive days, the Rainbow Wahine finally found the winning touch against the Broncos (5-2) of the West Coast Conference. Hawai'i captured the doubles point, then won five of six singles matches for the win.
Despite the convincing score, UH more than earned the victory with a trio of matches going the distance.
Sophie Kobuch and
Barbara Pinterova each won in straight sets for UH on the top two courts, while
Katarina Poljakova (No. 3),
Alyssa Nafarrete (No. 5) and
Aglae Van den Bergh (No. 6) rallied for wins after each dropping the first set of their matches. Poljakova and Nafarrete came through in the clutch winning third-set tiebreakers, while Van den Bergh pulled off a narrow 6-4 win in her final set.
The Rainbow Wahine return home before embarking on another road trip, beginning with a match at Cal State Northridge on Tuesday, March 9 at 2:00 p.m. PT (12:00 p.m. HT).
