Women’s Basketball Drops Final Regular Season Game At Utah State

LOGAN, Utah – The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team made a run in the second half, but couldn't hold off Utah State, as the Aggies won 53-51 on Saturday afternoon at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum in Logan, Utah.

The Rainbow Wahine finish the regular season with a 10-19 overall record and a 4-12 WAC mark. Utah State finishes 13-16 overall and 5-11 in conference play.

In a battle for the seventh and eighth seeds in the upcoming, WAC Tournament, UH with the loss will be the No. 8 seed in the tournament, while Utah State earned the No. 7 seed.

The Rainbow Wahine will open the WAC Tournament against No. 1 seed Fresno State on Wednesday, March 10 at 12 p.m. PT (10 a.m. HT).

On Saturday afternoon, the Rainbow Wahine came back in the second half and made a run to take a four-point lead with 10 minutes left in the game. But UH couldn't hold off a Utah State rally, as the Aggies pulled out the victory.

Trailing by two points, with 10 seconds remaining in the game, UH's Keisha Kanekoa drove the length of the floor, but missed a layup as time expired.

Senior Dita Liepkalne led the offense with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Breanna Arbuckle had six points and 12 rebounds. Leilani Galdones came off the bench to score nine points and Kanekoa added nine points and four assists.

In the first half, both teams struggled shooting, as UH shot 27.6 percent and Utah State shot 25.8. The Aggies hit a couple more free throws to close the half and take a 25-21 lead at the break.

The lead changed hands four times in the first half, while Galdones came off the bench to score six points. Liepkalne and Arbuckle each added four points, while Arbuckle also grabbed six rebounds.

With the conclusion of the regular season, the Rainbow Wahine now head to the WAC Tournament in Reno, Nev., which begins Wednesday, March 10. UH will fly from Salt Lake City on Sunday to Reno, in preparation of Wednesday's game.
