DENVER – University of Hawai'i pitcher,
Stephanie Ricketts, was named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, for March 1-7. This is the third honor for Ricketts in her career.
Ricketts, a sophomore from San Jose, Calif., posted a 1.56 ERA in four appearances while holding opponents to a .186 batting average last week. She tied a season high with 10 strikeouts against Seattle on March 5, just one shy of her career high. Ricketts lost a heartbreaking 1-0, eight-inning game to No. 1 Washington in which she took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and finished the game with a three-hitter losing on an error with the international tie-break rules in place. She also came in to earn her first save of the season against East Carolina on Sunday. Against the Pirates, she entered with a runner on second and no outs and proceeded to retire the final six batters in a row, striking out the side in the seventh.
Ricketts is now 4-5 on the year and has a 2.88 ERA in 60.2 innings pitched. She has seven completed games in 10 starts and has walked 26 and struck out 48 batters while holding opponents to a .249 batting average.
Ricketts is the third Rainbow Wahine to earn a weekly WAC honor this season. Freshman pitcher
Kaia Parnaby and freshman centerfielder
Kelly Majam swept the honors for the week of Feb. 15-21. Last year as a rookie, Ricketts earned the award twice and was named the WAC's Freshman of the Year.
