Scott Wong Hired As Women's Volleyball Associate Coach

HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i head women's volleyball coach Dave Shoji announced the hiring of Scott Wong as the new associate coach on the Rainbow Wahine volleyball staff.

Wong comes to UH from the University of San Francisco, where he was an associate head coach for the Lady Dons for one season. The Punahou graduate previously coached at Pepperdine, serving as an assistant coach for the men's team for four seasons under legendary head coach Marv Dunphy. At Pepperdine, Wong was on staff for a national championship as well as two MPSF championship teams.

Wong spent one season in 2006 with the Rainbow Wahine as a volunteer assistant, helping on a team that advanced to the NCAA Regional finals.

“We're excited to bring Scott back to the Rainbow Wahine 'ohana,” Shoji said. “He brings a fresh outlook to our program after extensive work on the men's side of volleyball. He's a seasoned recruiter and brings tactical expertise from many different views of the game.”

The Pearl City, O'ahu, native played his collegiate volleyball at Pepperdine, earning AVCA All-America honors three times and MPSF all-conference honors during all four years. In 1998, Wong was named the AVCA National and MPSF Freshman of the Year.

After his collegiate career ended, Wong joined the US National Team, helping the team to a gold medal at the 2001 World University Games. He then enjoyed a great career on the professional beach volleyball ranks, highlighted by a second place finish in the 2007 New York AVP Tour event. Won was ranked as high as No. 16 individually and No. 6 as a team in the AVP rankings.

Wong prepped at Punahou, where he was an all-state honoree in both volleyball and basketball.

The 2001 Pepperdine graduate is married to the former Tamar Hassing.
