Softball Takes on Troy; Hosts Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament

Tournament Notes

The University of Hawai'i softball team (12-8) continues its month long homestand this week with a doubleheader against Troy on Wednesday, March 10 starting at 6:00 pm before hosting the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament from March 12-14, 2010. Troy will stay to compete in this weekend's tournament along with Loyola Marymount and perennial power, DePaul.

The Rainbow Wahine just completed the 2010 Bank of Hawaii Invitational this past week, posting a 3-2 record. Hawaii notched two wins over East Carolina and one against Seattle, but dropped a pair of games to defending NCAA champions and current No. 1 Washington, including an eight-inning, 1-0 heartbreaker.

The Rainbow Wahine enter the fifth week of action with a 12-8 record. As a team, the 'Bows are batting a solid .302 with an impressive 40 home runs that have accounted for 65 of the team's 129 runs scored.  Junior third baseman, Melissa Gonzalez now leads the UH squad with a .400 batting average (24-for-60). Gonzalez has been consistant at the plate this season, and has three doubles, five home runs and 13 RBI. She has a team-high eight multiple hit games and hit safely in all five games this past weekend. In the BOH Invitational, she led the team with a .500 average with seven hits in 14 at bats. Kelly Majam, UH's lead-off hitter and freshman centerfielder, continues to impress in her rookie season. Majam leads the team with 19 runs scored, 26 hits, six home runs, and a .788 slugging percentage. Although she cooled off offensively this past week and had her team-high 14 game hit streak snapped in the 'Bows second game against ECU, Majam's defensive skills sparkled in centerfield, making several highlight-reel plays with all-out effort.

Reigning WAC Pitcher of the Week, Stephanie Ricketts (4-5) and freshman #Kaia Parnaby# are evolving into a formidable one-two punch on the mound for the 'Bows. Ricketts looked sharp this past weekend, making four appearances and tossing 18 innings. Although she went 1-2 in the tourney, she threw arguably her best game of the season in UH's first game against No. 1 Washington. Ricketts fired a complete game against the powerful Huskies, taking a no-hitter through four-and-two-thirds innings and a shut-out through the first seven innings, before losing in eight innings, 1-0. The sophomore also fanned a season-high 10 batters against Seattle in UH's opening game. Parnaby (7-3) has fired 60.1 innings and has a 2.32 ERA. The Aussie southpaw leads the staff with 70 strike outs to just 17 walks and has tossed three shut outs in eight complete games. She has held teams to a .237 batting average.
