Box Score

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i softball team (15-8) opened the 2010 Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament with a 12-4 win over Troy in six innings. The 'Bows were propelled by home runs hit by Kelly Majam, Kanani Pu'u-Warren, and Katie Grimes. Sophomore pitcher Stephanie Ricketts (6-5) earned the complete game win.

Ricketts tossed six innings, giving up four runs on five hits with four walks and nine strike outs.

The 'Bows scored first on a fielder's choice hit to short by Amanda Tauali'i that allowed Jessica Iwata to score from third in the bottom of the first inning.

The Trojans responded by tying the score at 1-1 in the top of the second with a solo home run by Sarah Harris.

The Rainbow Wahine broke the tie in the bottom of the frame with a two-run home run to right-centerfield by Grimes that drove in Alex Aguirre who had earlier reached on a walk.

Hawai`i extended their lead to 5-1 in the fourth on two solo home runs by Pu`u-Warren and Majam.

But in the top of the fifth, Troy rallied back, posting three runs of their own to cut the score to 5-4. Troy's Sarah Shields started things with a one-out walk. Kala Moore followed with a single to short to put runners at first and second. Kaitlin Kenney then laid down a sacrifice bunt to first, but on the play the first baseman's wild throw bounced all the way to the rightfield fence, allowing all three-runners to cross the plate. The Trojans followed with a double over the rightfielder to put another runner into scoring position. But Ricketts settled things down, eventually striking out the final two batters to thwart the rally.

The 'Bows rallied on their own in the bottom of the fifth, erupting for six more runs to pull away from Troy. Hawai`i capitalized on two walks, two errors and four hits to score the runs. The inning was highlighted by back-to-back doubles by Majam and Iwata.

In the sixth, the coup de grace came with runners at second and third and Grimes at the plate. The senior catcher cashed in her third RBI of the game with a single up the middle that scored Traci Yoshikawa from third, thus ending the game with the eight-run mercy rule in effect.

UH had five batters with multiple hits. Majam was 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and a home run; Iwata went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI double; Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with an RBI; Jenna Rodriguez was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk; and Grimes was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a home run.

Troy's Haley Hutchins suffered the loss, giving up five runs on six hits in 3.2 innings. She walked two and struck out three. Sally Ward closed the game for the Trojans, tossing the final 2.0 innings. She gave up seven runs on seven hits with a pair of walks.
