'Bows Win Tournament; Defeats DePaul, 4-1

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i softball team (18-9) won the 2010 Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament with a 4-1 victory over DePaul (11-8) today at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Sophomore Stephanie Ricketts, earned her third win in the tourney and was named the tourney's Most Outstanding pitcher, and freshman centerfielder, Kelly Majam was named Most Valuable Player after hitting .375, scoring seven runs with a double, and three home runs this week.

Ricketts (8-5) scattered seven hits and gave up just one run in her 11th complete game off the season. She did not walk any batters and struck out four in her 16th appearance.

DePaul's starter, Becca Heteniak, (6-6) also tossed a complete game, giving up four runs on four hits with two walks and eight strike outs.

After both teams retired the first nine batters, UH broke the scoreless game on Majam's opposite-field blast over the left-centerfield fence.

DePaul responded by tying the score in the bottom of the frame. Tara Vonn started the inning with an infield single to the second baseman. But on the play, the UH second baseman's throw to first sailed wide and allowed Vonn to hustle to second on the throwing error. A sacrifice bunt bay Alex Morocco pushed Vonn to third and scored on looping RBI single to right by DPU pitcher, Heteniak. The score after four complete innings was tied at 1-1.

In the fifth, UH pulled ahead, posting three runs to take the lead. Alex Aguirre started the rally with an opposite-field double to the right-centerfield gap. Kanani Pu'u-Warren then traded places with Aguirre at second with back-to-back doubles to right-centerfield. Later, with two outs, Majam kept things going by drawing a walk. Jessica Iwata then hit a hard chopper up the middle that ricocheted off the second baseman and rolled to the fence for a double. On the play, Pu`u-Warren scored from second and Majam sprinted around the bases to score from first.

DePaul had their best scoring opportunity in the sixth. Pinch hitter, Katelyn Braget and Tara Voss led the inning with back-to-back singles to leftfield.  A ground out to second pushed both runners into scoring position with one out. But Ricketts settled down and got a comebacker for the second out and a strike out to end the rally.

This is the second tournament this season that the 'Bows have won. In the season's opening week, UH defeated No. 10 Stanford to win the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic.

The 'Bows conclude their non-conference schedule next week with the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament, featuring No. 13 California and Lipscomb from Mar. 17-20.
