Kua Wins Hawai‘i State Amateur Stroke Play Championship

HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i sophomore #T.J. Kua# captured the 2010 Hawai'i State Amateur Stroke Play Championships over the weekend with a four-round total of 5-under par 283 at the Pearl Country Club. Kua closed out the tournament with a final round 2-over 74.
 
The Lihu'e, Kaua'i native, who last summer won the prestigious Manoa Cup and competed in the Sony Open in January, shot rounds of 72-69-68-74. Runner-up Bradley Shigezawa finished four strokes back at 1-under 287.
 
Kua opened the tournament with an even par 72 on Thursday and moved up the leaderboard with a 3-under 69 on Friday. He entered weekend play with a two shot lead over Shigezawa and increased his lead to five shots after a 4-under 68 on Saturday.
 
Kua and Shigezawa were the only competitors to shoot under par for the tournament. Also competing in the 87-player field were Kua's UH teammate Jared Sawada (79-78-80-75-=312/T28th) and incoming recruit David Saka (72-74-76-78=300/11th).
 
Kua and the Warrior golf team will compete in the Barona Collegiate Cup in Lakeside, Calif., March 25-26.
