HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i softball team (19-10) lost to No. 13/12 California, 5-0, on the second day of the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament. UH's
Stephanie Ricketts (9-6) threw five-plus innings in the loss, while Cal's starter, Valerie Arioto (11-3), struck out 17 en route to a four-hit shut-out tonight at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Ricketts gave up five runs on six hits with a walk and two strike outs. Relief pitcher,
Jenna Rodriguez, who started the game as the designated player, closed the game, walking just one with one strike out. She retired six of the seven batters faced.
Cal's Arioto scattered four hits in seven innings and did not issue any walks.
The Golden Bears scored one run in the second on an RBI ground out by Jolene Henderson that drove in Frani Echivarria from third.
Cal notched two more runs in the third. Shannon Thomas got things started with a single to right-centerfield. Cal's pitcher, Arioto, then helped herself out with a two-run home run to rightfield. The Golden Bears added two more runs in the fifth, capitalizing on a couple of errors and getting an RBI single by LIndsey Ziegenhirt that pushed their lead to 5-0.
The 'Bows had a few scoring opportunities with two runners on base in three innings. But their best chance in the sixth, when
Melissa Gonzalez and
Amanda Tauali'i started the inning with two singles, but then Arioto settled down to strike out the next three batters to retire the side.
