Rainbow Wahine Beat Arizona In Spring Match Thursday Night

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team beat Arizona 25-19, 24-26, 26-24, 25-13 on Thursday night in its annual spring match at the Stan Sheriff Center. UH showed the 1,963 fans in attendance some fresh faces and solid play against the Pac-10 opponent.

Along with some new players, UH was led by returning All-American Kanani Danielson, who had 20 kills and 11 digs. Senior setter Dani Mafua had 45 assists and 21 digs and newcomer Chanteal Satele had 14 kills.

The defense for UH was led by Elizabeth Ka'aihue, who had 22 digs and the Rainbow Wahine totaled 66 as a team. Brittany Hewitt had nine kills and 10 blocks in the middle.

In the first set of the night, UH had 13 kills, including four kills each by Kanani Danielson and Corinne Cascioppo as the Rainbow Wahine won 25-19. Brittany Hewitt had three kills and Chanteal Satele added two kills. The Rainbow Wahine hit .257 for the set, and held the Wildcats to a .163 hitting percentage.

The Rainbow Wahine led the second set 24-22, but the Wildcats won four straight points to earn the 26-24 victory. Danielson had eight kills in the set, while Hewitt, Cascioppo and Satele each had two kills.

Similar to the second set, Arizona led 24-20, but UH rallied for the final six points of the match behind the serving of Alex Griffiths to win 26-24. Satele led the way with seven kills in the set, while Danielson had six kills.

UH jumped in front of Arizona early in the first set 6-1, and cruised to a 25-13 win, hitting .417 for the set. Satele had five kills and Hewitt added three kills in the balanced offensive attack.
