HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team (8-9) had its best offensive output of the season, beating the Air Force Falcons (5-13) 15-6 in front of a crowd of 2,698 at Les Murakami Stadium Friday.
Sam Spangler (2-3) got the win, striking out six in 5.0 innings. Alex Baker (0-3) took the loss for Air Force while
Jesse Moore came in to throw a four-inning save.
Easton Torigoe came off the bench to provide a spark for the Rainbows, hitting a grand slame while going 2-for-2 with three runs and four RBI.
Kalani Brackenridge added a 3-for-4 game with two runs, a double and a stolen base.
Collin Bennett added a 1-for-3 game with two RBI, three runs and a homer with
Greg Garcia going 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run.
Kolten Wong added a double, three RBI and one run.
The Falcons jumped out early, scoring two runs in the top of the first. After Jeffrey Van Doornum hit a RBI-single in the second, Air Force got its lead to 3-1 with another run in the third.
After allowing another Falcon run in the fifth, the Rainbows found their groove offensively.
David Freitas started the scoring by sacrificing in a run in the bottom of the fifth. Then Torigoe, who came into the game in the second inning, blasted his homer to right, clearing the bases to make it 6-4.
UH then ran away with it in the seventh. Bennett hit a two-run homer to start the seven-run inning. After
Pi'ikea Kitamura drove in another run and scored on an error, Wong hit a three-run double down the right line, making it 13-4.
AFA would add runs in the eighth and ninth innings while Hawai'i got two more in the eighth, making the final score 15-6.
The series continues tomorrow at 6:35 p.m.
