HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team returned home with an impressive 5-2 win over Air Force Saturday at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 3-11 overall, while snapping a three-match losing streak.
After playing 11 straight matches on the road, UH got back on the winning track with its first home match in nearly two months. The day got off to an exciting start with a tight doubles matchup. After splitting courts No. 2 and 3, it came down to the top court.
Sophie Kobuch and
Katarina Poljakova won the final six games to rally to an 8-6 victory over Allie Chermel and Tahlia Smoke and secure UH's first point of the day.
The Rainbow Wahine wrapped up the win in singles after taking four of six courts. UH swept the top three courts as Kobuch, Poljakova and
Barbara Pinterova all won in straight sets. Meanwhile, on the No. 5 court, junior
Natasha Zorec pulled of a three-set victory, out-lasting Christine Molina 7-5, 6-7 (5), 1-0. After winning 13 of its first 15 matches this season, Air Force dropped to 13-4 with its second straight loss.
The Rainbow Wahine will play the second half of its doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. when they take on Lewis & Clark College.
