Baseball Shuts Out Air Force For Second Straight Victory

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team shut out Air Force 4-0 on Saturday night, holding the Falcons to just four hits for its second straight win at Les Murakami Stadium.
 
The Rainbows (9-9) used three pitchers to combine on the shut out, led by starter Josh Slaats, who picked up his second victory of the season. The Falcons drop to 5-14 on the season.
 
Slaats went 5 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and striking out a season-high 10 batters. Blair Walters relieved Slaats and went 2 2/3 innings, striking out four batters and Lenny Linsky finished the ninth inning with one strikeout.
 
The Rainbows broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Pi'ikea Kitamura. Kitamura singled up the middle, scoring Collin Bennett, who reached base on a double down the left field line.
 
UH added a second run in the bottom of the fifth inning, after Greg Garcia singled to right field, scoring Sean Montplaisir from first base after an error on the right fielder.
 
The game remained 2-0 until the bottom of the eighth inning, when Kolten Wong hit a two-run home run over the right field fence, scoring Garcia, who singled to start the inning.
 
Overall, Garcia went 3-for-3 on the night and Kitamura was 2-for-4 with an RBI. UH had eight hits in the game, while Air Force had four.
 
The two teams return to Les Murakami Stadium on Sunday for a 1:05 p.m. first pitch, the third game of the four-game series.
