UH Scores Two Seventh Inning Runs To Defeat Lipscomb, 5-4

Box Score

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i softball team scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Lipscomb, 5-4. Freshman pitcher, Kaia Parnaby (12-4) earned the win in relief, blanking the Lady Bison through the final 2.2 innings. The 'Bows got three home runs in the game by Traci Yoshikawa, Melissa Gonzalez, and Kelly Majam on the final day of the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament.

Stephanie Ricketts got the start on the mound for the 'Bows, but lasted 4.1 innings. She was the pitcher of record for Lipscomb's four runs. Ricketts allowed six hits with a walk and strike out. Parnaby threw the final 2.2 innings to earn her 12th win of the season.

Lipscomb's Christen Campbell (4-2) took the loss, throwing a complete game. She gave up five runs on six hits with two walks and three strike outs.

The 'Bows got off to a strong start, posting a pair of runs in the second inning on a two-run home run by Yoshikawa. Hawai`i added another run in the fourth on a solo home run to centerfield by Melissa Gonzalez that pushed UH's lead to 3-0.

But in the next half inning, the 'Bows allowed four runs to score—two on wild pitches—using three different pitchers. Lipcomb's Christen Campbell led the inning off with a single up the middle. Whitney Kiihnl later hit a single back to the pitcher to put runners at first and second with one out. Lauren Dortwegt and Mackenzie Tucker then got back-to-back singles to drive in Campbell and Kiihnl respectively. Later, Dortwegt and Tucker both scored on wild pitches to overtake the 'Bows on the scoreboard, 4-3. Ricketts was relieved by Jenna Rodriguez in the middle of the inning, who walked both batters faced. Parnaby then entered with the bases packed with Lady Bison and proceeded to induce a pop-up to short and then got a ground out to short to end the onslaught.

Parnaby went on to space two hits in the final two-and-two-thirds innings with two strike outs for the win.

Hawai`i threatened to tie the score in the bottom of the sixth, after loading the bases with one out. Lipscomb pitcher, Campbell, then got a pop-up to short for the second out. #Kanani Pu`u-Warren# then ripped a hard grounder down the first baseline that ricocheted off the first baseman straight to the second baseman who flipped back to first in time to thwart the 'Bows' rally.

In the seventh inning, still trailing 4-3, Majam tied the score with a solo home run to deep centerfield. Later, with two outs, the Lady Bison opted to intentionally walk Gonzalez to face Amanda Tauali`i. Lipscomb almost ended the inning on a little foul pop-up, but the first baseman dropped the ball, thus extending UH's chances and Tauali`i's at bat. Tauali`i battled at the plate before hitting a grounder to second, but the ball went off the second baseman and rolled into rightfield, allowing Gonzalez to score the winning run.
