Walker, Umlauft Spark Warrior Volleyball To Five Set Win

HONOLULU — The fifth-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team outlasted Long Beach State in five sets, 33-35, 30-25, 30-20, 30-25, 15-5 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match-up Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
 
The Warriors (14-7, 10-6 MPSF) were led by Joshua Walker and Jonas Umlauft, who each had 28 kills. Walker added 11 digs for his fourth career double-double and hit .542 with two aces and five blocks. Umlauft also served up two aces and had nine digs and four blocks.
 
As a team, the Warriors hit .363 and out-blocked the Beach, 14-11.5.
 
Long Beach State's (11-10, 7-7) Dean Bittner had a team-high 26 kills and three service aces. Jim Baughman added 20 kills. Libero Kirk Francis had 21 digs.
 
A service error by the 49ers' Jim Baughman in Set 1 gave the Warriors a 29-26 advantage. The Beach then fended off three set points to tie the score at 29. After exchanging leads, a kill by Walker put the Warriors up 33-32. Bittner responded with consecutive kills and the 49ers scored the final three points to win the game 35-33.
 
The Warriors took the early lead at 13-12 in Set 2 and never looked back. UH led 27-25 and scored three straight points for a 30-25 victory.
 
In Set 3, an attack error by Baughman sparked an 11-2 run by the Warriors after leading 19-18 to win the game comfortably at 30-20.
 
The 49ers evened the match at 2-2 after taking Set 4. LBSU maintained a lead for most of the game and despite Umlauft's 10 kills, won 30-25.
 
In the deciding fifth set, the Warriors jumped to an early 5-1 and never looked back in the 15-5 rout.
 
The Warriors will next travel to conference leader Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif., Friday, March 26 and Saturday March 27.
