Balentine Complets First Heptathlon In Sixth Place

BERKELEY, Calif. – University of Hawai'i track and field freshman Samantha Balentine completed her first career heptathlon in sixth place at the Cal Multi-Event Meet Thursday at Edwards Stadium.
 
The freshman from Lodi Calif., totaled 2,840 points in the seven-discipline event. Teammate Natalija Waldhuber, who completed her first heptathlon as a Rainbow Wahine, placed 10th with 2,624 points.
 
Entering the second day of the event in fourth place overall, Balentine placed seventh in the long jump (16-4.25/4.98m); ninth in the javelin (94-9/28.87m); and fifth in the 800-meter run (2:27.99).
 
Waldhuber threw a personal-best 110-7 (33.70m) in the javelin, the fifth-best on the day, while placing ninth in the 800 (2:33.56) and 10th in the long jump (15-7/4.75m).
 
Idaho State's Cassie Merkley ran away with the individual title with 5,246 points.
 
Balentine and Waldhuber will compete with the rest of the Rainbow Wahine at the Stanford Invitational Friday and Saturday while the distance runners will compete at San Francisco State's Distance Carnival on Friday.
