Men's Golf Opens Barona Collegiate Cup

Day 1 Results

LAKESIDE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team is currently in 16th place after two rounds of the Barona Collegiate Cup, Thursday, at the Barona Creek Golf Club. The Warriors carded rounds of 378 and 405 for a 783 total.
 
Leading UH are sophomore #T.J. Kua and junior Kamden Brakel# in a tie for 31st place at four over-par (148). Kua, who recently won the Hawai'i State Amateur Stroke Play Championships, fired a first-round 68 to begin Round 2 tied for second place. Kua struggled a bit in the second round, however, carding an 80 to fall 29 places.
 
In contrast, Brakel moved up four spots from the first to the second round. He played consistently well, sinking nine birdies on the day with rounds of 73 and 75.
 
Also competing for the Warriors are freshman Cory Oride (77-79=156/T72nd), sophomore Jared Sawada (78-87=165/99th), freshman Henry Park (82-84=166/T100th).
 
Atop the team leaderboard is host San Diego State at eight-under par (712). After carding a 357 in the first round, SDSU trailed Nevada by four shots, but was able to take the lead by firing a second-round 355. Going into the final round, SDSU will have an 18-stroke advantage over Nevada.
 
Leading individually is John Chin of UC Irvine (65-71=136).
 
The tournament concludes Friday with the third and final round.
