DENVER – University of Hawai'i high jumper
Amber Kaufman was named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week for the week of March 22-28.
Kaufman, a junior from San Jose, Calif. (Branham HS), won the high jump competition at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., with a jump of 6 feet, 3.25 inches (1.91 meters). Kaufman's mark is first in the nation in the event, and ranks first in the WAC by over seven inches.
The award marks the second straight week a UH athlete was recognized by the conference. Last week,
TeRina Keenan won the weekly award following her performance at the USC Trojan Invitational where she captured the discus title with a huge personal-best throw of 51.69 meters (169 feet, 7 inches).
During the indoor season, Kaufman earned WAC Athlete of the Week honors twice and with her three weekly awards last season, she now has been honored six times over her career.
Louisiana Tech's Antoinette Cobb earned the “track” athlete of the week award. Cobb, a senior from Weyanoke, La. (West Feliciana HS), won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.34 seconds at the LSU Relays in Baton Rouge, La. over the weekend. Cobb's time of 13.34 is the second-fastest time ran by any female WAC athlete in 11 years, right behind the Louisiana Tech school record mark of 13.28 set by Doria Appleberry in 2005.
