Women’s Tennis Gears Up For WAC Action On The Road

SAN JOSE, Calif. —The University of Hawaii women's tennis team heads to California to face a trio of Western Athletic Conference squads. The Rainbow Wahine (5-11) will play Utah State (6-5) on Friday, April 2, Fresno State (1-14) on Saturday, April 3 and Idaho (15-1) on Sunday, April 4. All three matches will be at the Spartan Tennis Complex.

This will be the first leg of UH's final road trip of the season. UH will head to Ruston, La., for a pair of matches against Boise State (WAC) and Louisiana Tech on Thursday, April 8 before returning home for its final three matches of the season. The Rainbow Wahine will host New Mexico State (April 16) and San Jose State (April 17) to conclude its WAC schedule. Hawai'i is currently 0-1 in conference play with a loss to Nevada in January.

The Rainbow Wahine are coming off of a three-match win streak at home and will be working hard to gain three more road wins this weekend. However, Fresno State and Idaho each have a nationally ranked player in singles; No. 10 Anastasia Petukhova (Fresno State) and No. 102 Gabriela Niculescu (Idaho). Idaho is currently on a 14-match win streak and will provide stiff competition for UH.

The Rainbow Wahine will rely on senior Sophie Kobuch, who was recently named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for March 15-21. Kobuch and Katarina Poljakova are on a four-match win streak in doubles play and are sure to provide tough competition for their WAC competitors. Poljakova and Natasha Zorec are both coming off of a three-match win streak in singles play as well.
