SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team began a stretch of seven straight Western Athletic Conference matches on a winning note with a 6-1 victory over Utah State Friday afternoon at the Spartan Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 6-11 overall and 1-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.
The win was UH's fourth in a row and the Rainbow Wahine evened their league record as they seek the program's first WAC regular season title. The Rainbow Wahine were impressive, winning on all three courts in doubles, then taking five of six matches in singles.
UH surrendered just one point against the Aggies (6-6, 0-1 WAC) and that was after
Alyssa Nafarrete was forced to retire just before the second set on the No. 6 court. Nafarrete had already taken the first set, 6-3. Four of UH's wins in singles came in straight sets, including a dominating performance by sophomore
Barbara Pinterova, who shutout Kristina Voytsekhovich, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 3 position.
The Rainbow Wahine will continue WAC action in San Jose with a match against Fresno State on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. PT (12:00 p.m. HT).
