HONOLULU - The No. 57 University of Hawai`i men's tennis team picked up a big 5-2 win over No. 28 Fresno State Saturday at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in the Western Athletic Conference.
In a pivotal match in the race for the WAC regular season title, the Rainbow Warriors got the best of the Bulldogs (13-8, 3-1 WAC), who suffered their first conference loss. The match was originally scheduled for Friday, but was postponed due to rain during the beginning of singles action.
UH entered Saturday with a 1-0 lead after an exciting finish in doubles on Friday night. After splitting the first two courts, it came down to the No. 1 court where the duo of
Andreas Weber and
Philipp Eberhard outlasted Remi Boutillier and Rikus de Villiers, 9-7. Boutillier and de Villiers entered as the 19
th ranked doubles team in the nation. UH, meanwhile won the double points for the fourth time in their last five attempts.
The Rainbow Warriors fell behind 2-1 to start Saturday's action, after dropping courts No. 4 and No. 5 in straight sets. But UH rallied for four straight wins by Weber,
Dennis Lajola,
Leo Rosenberg and
Dmytro Kovalyov. Weber, UH's lone senior, clinched the all-important fourth point by rallying for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win over de Villiers. Meanwhile, Rosenberg remained undefeated in dual matches (13-0) with a win over Tejesvi Veerepalli on court No. 3.
The Rainbow Warriors will return to action this afternoon when they host Utah State at approximately at 5:00 p.m. at the UH Tennis Complex
