Water Polo Takes On Conference Leader Stanford On Sunday

Match Notes

HONOLULU – The fifth-ranked University of Hawai`i women's water polo team returns home this week for its last two regular season matches, against No. 2 Stanford and No. 6 San Jose State, before heading to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships.

The Rainbow Wahine, who carry a nine-match win streak, face the Cardinal, at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 11 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. Admission for all UH water polo games is free.

Stanford also is on a nine-match win streak and is in first place in the MPSF with a 4-0 record. UH is tied in fourth place with a 3-2 mark. Overall the Rainbow Wahine are 15-6, while Stanford is 19-1.

Following the Stanford match, UH will play its final home match of the year against San Jose State on Saturday, April 17 at 6 p.m.

This will be the first time UH meets Stanford this season. Last year, the Cardinal defeated the Rainbow Wahine, 8-6 in conference play. Previously this season, the Rainbow Wahine slid past San Jose State, 10-5 on Feb. 28 at the UC Irvine Tournament.

Four Rainbow Wahine Lead MPSF In Goal-Scoring
As of the Apr. 5 MPSF goal-scoring statistics, Monika Eggens, her sister Carmen Eggens, Leonie Van Der Molen and freshman Amarens Genee rank among the 25 best in the conference. Monika Eggens leads the entire conference with a 2.38 goals per match average, with a total of 50 goals in 21 matches. Carmen Eggens ranks 13th, tallying a total of 31 goals in 21 matches with a 1.47 gpm average. Van Der Molen, who sat out the majority of last week is tied for 16th in the MPSF, tallying 29 goals overall. For the first time this season, freshman Amarens Genee ranks 22nd for UH, after an impressive week on the road, she comes out with a total of 26 goals in 21 matches and a 1.23 gpm average.

UCLA Hosts MPSF Championships
The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship will be hosted by the UCLA this season at the Spieker Aquatic Center in Los Angeles, Calif. The tournament will begin on Apr. 30 and conclude May 2. MPSF teams will be seeded according to final conference standings.
