No. 25 Hawai‘i Sweeps Utah State, Home Run Records Fall

Jenna Rodriguez hit three home runs today, including the team's record breaking 85th homer in the second game. UH launched nine home runs in the series and is now at 89 on the year.
LOGAN, Utah—The 25th ranked University of Hawai'i softball team (30-11, 8-0 WAC) overpowered Utah State in today's doubleheader, 12-4 (six innings) and 18-8. The 'Bows cranked out nine home runs on the day, raising their total to 89 to shatter the previous record of 84 set in 2007. Kelly Majam hit her 21st home run of the season to tie former UH All-American, Kate Robinson's single-season school record that was set in 2008.

After the series opener was snowed out yesterday, the 'Bows came out firing on all cylinders. In today's Western Athletic Conference doubleheader, the 'Bows racked up 32 hits and outscored the Aggies 30-12 at Johnson Field on the campus of Utah State. Hawai'i has hit at least four home runs in 10 games this season. UH hit four in the first game and five in the second. The 'Bows have hit at least four home runs all five games on this roadtrip.

Jessica Iwata led the 'Bows at the plate in the doubleheader, hitting .667 with two home runs—including her first career grand slam, two doubles, seven RBI and three runs scored. Majam hit .625 (5-for-9) with two doubles, a home run, four RBI and four runs scored and Jenna Rodriguez went 4-for-9 with a team-high three home runs and five RBI.

Sophomore pitcher, Stephanie Ricketts (15-6, 6-0 WAC) earned both wins today, tossing a complete game in the first game and coming in to fire the final 4.2 innings in relief for the win.


GAME 1: Hawai'i 12, Utah State 4 (Six innings)

UH started the game by drawing two consecutive walks, but USU's starter, Stacey Ellingsworth settled down, getting three ground balls to end the rally. But in the second, the 'Bows posted a single run to take an early, 1-0 lead. Traci Yoshikawa led off by getting beaned. Kanani Pu'u-Warren then hit a ball to the third baseman, but on the play, the third baseman's errant throw sailed past the second baseman, allowing Yoshikawa to race home, but Pu'u-Warren was cut down at the plate on a relay from rightfield-to-second-to-the catcher.

Utah State tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the from on an RBI double down the leftfield line by Tindall that scored T Ferguson from second.

Rodriguez then broke the tie in the third inning with a solo home run over the left-centerfield fence. UH went on to add two more unearned runs in the inning after Yoshikawa, who was hit by another pitch, came around to score on an error on the rightfielder. Katie Grimes followed with an RBI single to left to scoreAmanda Tauali'i from third to push UH's lead to 4-1.

Rodriguez struck again in the fourth, hitting her second home run of the game to left-centerfield that drove in Melissa Gonzalez. For Rodriguez, it marked the first time in her UH career that she's hit two home runs in a game. She now has eight homers on the year.

In the fifth, Majam drilled her school record-tying, 21st home run to centerfield. Majam went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs. She has now hit safely in 15 straight games, a new career-high.

Hawai'i added a second run in the fifth when Gonzalez, who walked, came around to score on an error on the leftfielder.

The Rainbow Wahine then scored four runs in the sixth to put the game away on Jessica Iwata's first career grand slam, which drove in pinch-runner Tara Anguiano, Grimes, and Majam giving UH a 12-4 win in six innings. It is the 11th time this season that the 'Bows have mercy-ruled their opponent.


GAME 2: Hawai'i 18, Utah State 8

UH posted two runs in the top of the second on three consecutive hits to start the inning. Alex Aguirre led off with a single to centerfield and Pu'u-Warren hit her first career triple to the right-centerfield gap to score Aguirre for the game's first run. Tauali'i then came through with another single to right-centerfield to drive in Pu'u-Warren from third.

The Aggies got the run back in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Simone Hubbard to cut UH's lead in half, 2-1.

Iwata led the third inning off with a double to left. Iwata tried to score on Gonzalez's single to center on the next at-bat, but was thrown out at the plate. Rodriguez then launched her third homer of the day to break the UH team single-season home run record. The drive to left, put UH up 4-1.

But USU came roaring back in the bottom of the inning to overtake the Rainbow Wahine. Kelly Kaneshiro hit a three-run home run and Kali Cancelosi followed with a double that chased UH's starter Kaia Parnaby from the game. Ricketts then entered in relief and gave up an RBI single to Hubbard. Parnaby threw 2.1 innings, giving up five runs on four hits with a walk and three strike outs. At the end of three innings, Hawai'i trailed 5-4.

UH see-sawed back into the lead on back-to-back home runs from Iwata and Gonzalez in the fourth to go ahead, 6-5.

In the fifth, UH started to pull away, bringing 11 batters to the plate and scoring four runs to increase their lead to 10-5. Aguirre started the rally with a solo home run to left-centerfield. Pu'u-Warren and Tauali'i followed with two consecutive singles. Then after a strike out, Majam cleared the bases with a double to left-centerfield. Majam scored soon after on Iwata's second double of the game.

Both teams were held off the scoreboard in the sixth, but in the top of the seventh, UH started the inning by pounding out six consecutive hits en route to a eight-run inning. Mikalemi Tagab-Cruz started the rally with her first hit of the season, a single to right. Tauali'i, Grimes, and Majam then followed with three consecutive doubles. Grimes' two-bagger cleared the bases, and Majam's scored pinch-runner, Brynne Buchanan from second. Iwata kept her bat hot, with a single up the middle that scored Majam from second. Gonzalez then hit fourth double of the inning to drive in Iwata from first. After a ground out, Yoshikawa was hit by a pitch and then pinch-hitter, Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu hit her third home run of the season over the left-centerfield fence to end the scoring barrage which left UH with a 18-6 lead.

Utah State's Kaneshiro hit her second home run of the game in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough to overcome Hawai'i's huge lead.

Hawai'i racked up a season game-high 22 hits in the game.

Ricketts gave up three runs on four hits with two walks and three strike outs. She now has an even 100 strike outs on the season.

The 'Bows now have one day to travel to Boise State for their ever away series in Idaho. The two teams will play a single game on Friday, Apr. 9 at 3:00 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 10 at 1:00 p.m.
