RUSTON, La. - The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team split a pair of Western Athletic Conference matches Thursday, falling to No. 44 Boise State before defeating host Louisiana Tech Thursday at the La Tech Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Wahine moved to 8-13 overall and 3-3 in the WAC.
UH began the day with a tough 6-1 loss to the 44
th-ranked Broncos (15-5, 3-0 WAC). UH was impressive in doubles play after taking two of three matches and the first point of the match. The duo of
Sophie Kobuch and
Katarina Poljakova earned the team's first win over a ranked doubles opponent this season when they took down No. 38 Lauren Megale and Pichittra Thongdach, 8-3.
Barbara Pinterova and
Alyssa Nafarrete won by the same margin over Stephanie Jasper and Marlena Pietzuch. The pair has now won eight of their last 10 doubles matches.
Unfortunately for the Rainbow Wahine, their doubles play didn't carry over into singles action against the Broncos. Boise State won all singles courts, ending each match in straight sets.
UH, however, bounced back in the second match of the day, easily dispatching of host Louisiana Tech (6-14, 0-3 WAC) by a 5-2 margin. UH swept the doubles competition then won four of six matchups in singles. All four of UH's singles wins came in straight sets.
The Rainbow Wahine will return home for their last three matches of the regular season on Friday, April 16 against New Mexico State, Saturday, April 17 against San Jose State and Saturday, April 24 against Hawai'i Pacific.
