Rainbow Alumni Rallies Past No. 5 Warriors In Five

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team hosted its annual Alumni Night, which featured nearly 40 former Warriors, Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

A turnstile crowd of 1,151 watched the alumni defeat the varsity, 16-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-18, 17-15 in the featured match. With the crowd standing on match point, setter Curt Vaughan's kill off an overpass gave the old-timers the upset.

Tony Ching, who just completed an MVP season in the Puerto Rico Superior League, led all attackers with 18 kills while Jake Schkud, who is currently training with the U.S. National Team, had nine kills. Maulia La Barre added 10 kills and six blocks.

For the Warriors, Steven Grgas had a team-high 11 kills, outside hitter Steven Hunt added 10 kill, and outside hitter Gus Tuaniga had eight.

Head coach Charlie Wade started the match with his regular starting lineup and played the final four sets with his reserves. Middle blocker Brennon Dyer and outside hitter Joshua Walker each had three kills in the opening set as the Warriors ran away with the 25-16 victory.

After the varsity took Set 2, 25-21, the alumni rallied back to take the next two sets. The “Rainbows” led for much of Set 3 behind the hitting of Nemanja Komar and Sean Carney and won 25-19. They carried that momentum into Set 4. With Ching back in the lineup the serving of Komar and middle attack of La Barre, the alumni forced a fifth set with a 25-18 victory.

In the fifth and deciding set, Gus Tuaniga served five straight points as the Warriors opened an 8-3 lead. The Rainbows tied it at 12 off a La Barre overpass and ace by Ching. A kill by Dyer gave the Warriors match-point but consecutive kills by Ching gave the alumni match point of their own at 15-14. Bender's eighth kill gave the Rainbows another match point at 16-15 and Vaughan's kill gave the alumni the upset.

In the all-alumni opening match, the “Green” squad, led by Alex Berganio and Sivan Leoni, defeated the “Black” team, led by Curt Vaughan and Dan Fisher, 25-20, 25-22.

The Warriors return to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action and close out the regular season with a two-match series against UC Santa Barbara, April 16-17.
