'Bows Drop Both Ends Of Doubleheader To Bulldogs

Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team (16-15, 0-3 WAC) lost two games to the Fresno State Bulldogs (20-12, 3-0) 8-6 and 1-0, including a no-hitter by Bulldog Greg Gonzalez in the second game, in a doubleheader at Les Murakami Stadium Saturday.

Zach Gallagher (3-2) took the loss for UH in the first game while Derek Benny (1-2) came in to get the win for Fresno State. Tom Harlan pitched a hitless ninth to get the save for the 'Dawgs.

Christian Johnson led the way for the 'Bows, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and three RBI. Jeffrey Van Doornum was 2-for-4 with two runs while Kolten Wong went 2-for-4 with a stolen base.

Fresno State started the scoring early, posting an unearned run in the top of the first to go ahead 1-0.

Johnson gave UH the lead in the bottom of the second, blasting a two-run homer to left-center, putting the 'Bows ahead 2-1. But the Bulldogs had the answer, scoring four runs, including a mammoth two-run shot to right, putting them ahead 5-2.

Freitas sacrificed in a run in the bottom of the third to cut it back to 5-3. But the Bulldogs continued to add to their lead, scoring a run in the fourth and fifth innings, pushing their lead to 7-3.

Hawai'i added a run in the bottom of the fifth with the two teams trading runs in the eighth inning to make the final score 8-5.

Gonzalez (4-0) pitched the seven-inning no-hitter in the second game to get the win. Sam Spangler pitched great in the second game, allowing just one run on three hits, striking out seven in the loss.

It was just the fifth time in school history that UH had fallen victim to a no-hitter, the second in a seven-inning game. It was the second time the Rainbows had been no-hit in the past two seasons as Cody Wheeler of Coastal Carolina pitched a no-hitter last season on Mar. 26.

Fresno State scored the only run of the game in the second inning, on a sacrifice fly by Steve Detwiler.

The series concludes tomorrow with a game at 1:05 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
