Water Polo Ends Nine-Game Win Streak With 10-6 Loss To No. 2 Stanford

Scoresheet

HONOLULU – The fifth-ranked University of Hawai`i women's water polo team fell to No. 2 Stanford, 10-6 Sunday afternoon at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex, bringing its nine-game win streak to an end. The Rainbow Wahine are now 15-7 overall and 3-3 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play.

Junior Carmen Eggens found the net early for the Rainbow Wahine, scoring the first goal within one minute of the match to put the home team one up over the Cardinal. After three quiet minutes, Kelly Eaton scored the first for Stanford to begin a three-goal run over UH. Annika Dries ended the first period after scoring a penalty shot with 41-seconds left, putting the Cardinal up 4-1.

The second quarter saw little action until senior Ryan Hanson-Swaner cranked in her first goal from 8-meters out at 5:29. Both teams rallied back and forth through the period, answering back each time a goal in was scored. Stanford and UH each tallied two goals, ending the first half 6-3 in favor of the Cardinal.

Eaton put in another for Stanford to begin the second half within the first 40 minutes of play, increasing the Stanford's lead 7-3. Hanson-Swaner quickly answered back with her second goal followed by Monika Eggens also scoring her second goal at 6:04 in the third. The Cardinal came back with a 2-goal run to give themselves a 9-5 lead into the fourth.

UH struggled through the start of the fourth as Hanson-Swaner was ejected from the match indefinitely within 20 seconds of play. The Cardinal's man-up over UH lead to Eaton's fourth goal at 7:26. A goal by senior Dagmar Genee ended Stanford's 3-goal run but was not enough to take the lead for the Rainbow Wahine. Stanford held on for a 10-6 victory over UH.

Monika Eggens and Hanson-Swaner both lead the Rainbow Wahine with a pair of goals each.
Next UH will face No. 6 San Jose State for Senior Night, Apr. 17 at 7:00 p.m. HT at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. This will be the Rainbow Wahine's last match of the season.
