HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i first-year head women's basketball coach
Dana Takahara-Dias gathered the 2009-10 team, boosters, support staff and fans together to close her inaugural season Sunday night at an end of the year banquet at the Ala Moana Hotel.
Takahara-Dias and the Rainbow Wahine finished the season with a 10-20 overall record and a 4-12 Western Athletic Conference mark, qualifying for the WAC Tournament in Reno, Nev.
On Sunday night, the lone award handed out was the annual Ah Chew Goo award, which went junior
Keisha Kanekoa. The award was presented by Ah Chew Goo and Vince Goo. The keynote speaker was Mayor Mufi Hannemann. The Rainbow Wahine also honored their lone senior
Dita Liepkalne.
This season, the Rainbow Wahine faced one of the toughest schedules in the conference, playing 11 teams that went on to play in the postseason, including six NCAA Tournament teams.
UH beat one NCAA Tournament team in UC Riverside to open the season and another big non-conference win came against a Big-12 opponent in Kansas State.
Following conference play, four Rainbow Wahine earned all-WAC academic honors, including
Rebecca Dew,
Courtney Gaddis,
Dita Liepkalne and
Katie Wilson.
Individually,
Keisha Kanekoa finished WAC play second in assists, averaging 3.81 per game and fifth in free throw percentage, shooting 77.4 percent. Sophomore
Breanna Arbuckle finished second in blocked shots, averaging 1.56 per game and third in field goal percentage, shooting 49.7 percent.
The Rainbow Wahine return 11 letterwinners for next year's team, including four starters, along with Shawna Kuehu, who only played in five games this past year. The starters include Arbuckle, Dew, Kanekoa and the combination of
Allie Patterson,
Julita Bungaite and
Leilani Galdones.
