Former A.D. Sheriff Named To San Francisco Prep Hall Of Fame

SAN FRANCISCO – The late Stan Sheriff, a former University of Hawai'i Athletics Director, is one of 10 honorees for the 28th Annual San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame. The induction ceremonies will take place Saturday, May 15 at the Spanish Cultural Center-Patio Espanol Restaurant.

Sheriff, UH's Athletics Director from 1983 until his death in 1993, was also head football coach and A.D. at Northern Iowa from 1960-82. A standout at George Washington High School in the Bay Area from 1947-50, Sheriff went on to an All-American football career at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo and later played professionally for the Rams, Steelers, 49ers and Browns.

Sheriff is also a charter member of the Cal Poly-SLO Sports Hall of Fame and member of the UNI Sports Hall of Fame, UH Sports Circle of Honor, and National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Hall of Fame. UNI's field at UNI Dome is named Stan Sheriff Field and UH's Special Events Arena was renamed the Stan Sheriff Center.

The San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame, including this year's honorees, has honored 310 individuals. The SFPHF annually honors former outstanding San Francisco high school student-athletes, coaches, officials, media personnel and other individuals who have contributed to San Francisco prep athletics.

Stan Sheriff is an excellent example how an outstanding high school athlete's achievements – football – can lead to successful college education, professional football, teaching and coaching, and college administration careers. At George Washington HS, Sheriff was the 1st Team 1948 and 1949 All Academic/Athletic Association (AAA) center and linebacker. Included was his being named in 1949 3rd Team All-Northern California.

Following his graduation he was the first string center for four years (1950-1954) at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. In 1953 he led the Mustangs to the California Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAA) title with a 9-0 record. He also was the Most Valuable Player in the CCAA; 1st Team All-CCAA; 1st Team Little All-American; Honorable Mention National NCAA All-American; 1st Team Little All-Coast; and played in the East-West Shrine Football Classic and the Hula Bowl game.

Sheriff played in the National Football League (drafted by the Los Angeles Rams) and was on the Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, and Cleveland Browns teams during the 1954-1957 seasons. He was in the US Army in 1955.

He was a successful teacher, coach, and administrator at the University of Northern Iowa (1958-1983) and University of Hawai'i (1983-1993). At Northern Iowa he was both athletic director and head football coach. His gridiron record was 129-101-4, six league titles, 15 winning seasons, four bowl appearances, and two time named Coach of the Year. Sheriff was the Hawai'i Director of Athletics from 1983-1993. Sheriff is in the Cal Poly (SLO), Univ. of Hawai'i, and Northern Iowa Halls of Fame. Sheriff passed away in 1993.
