LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The No. 42 University of Hawai`i men's tennis team dropped its first Western Athletic Conference match this season with a 4-3 loss to New Mexico State Thursday at the NMSU Tennis Center. The Rainbow Warrior dropped to 8-7 on the year and 2-1 in the WAC.
The loss was UH's first against a non-ranked squad this year. The Aggies (11-6, 2-3 WAC) squeezed past UH in doubles competition, then clinched the win by splitting the singles competition. Two of UH's losses in singles came in tight three set matches, including
Leo Rosenberg's 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 loss to Arthur Surreux on the No. 3 court that decided the match. It was the sophomore's first dual match loss in singles this year (14-1).
The Rainbow Warriors got a pair of straight set wins by No. 110
Dennis Lajola and
Andreas Weber at the top two courts. Both Lajola and Weber remained undefeated (4-0) in WAC singles play. Meanwhile, junior
Jeremy Tweedt picked up UH's third point with a 5-7, 7-6, 6-3 win over Orlando Superlano at the No. 4 court.
UH will next face No. 44 Boise State on Saturday, April 17 at the NMSU Tennis Center.
