Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i Ranbow baseball team (18-17, 2-5 WAC) split a doubleheader at Sacramento State (13-18-1, 2-1), 2-3 and 7-4, at Hornet Field Saturday.

The Rainbows dropped the first game of the doubleheader 3-2, despite keeping the Hornets off the board for the first six innings. Sam Spangler (2-5) took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits in 6.2 innings. Jesse Darrah (3-2) got the win for the Hornets while Andrew Galvan came in to get the save.

Jeffrey Van Doornum provided most of the offense for the Rainbows, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Chase Koissian came off the bench to go 1-for-1 with a run and a walk while Kevin Macdonald provided a double.

Van Doornum had the only offense of the game early on, hitting a solo homer in the top of the fifth.

Sacramento State made their move in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with three singles before a walk and a hit batter with two outs plated two Hornet runners, giving them the 2-1 lead.

The Hornets added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning to get its lead to 3-1. That run proved to be very important as Van Doornum drove in Koissian in the bottom of the ninth, getting it back to 3-2. Macdonald gave UH a good shot to tie the game, but lined out to left to record the final out of the game.

After the pitchers duel in the first game, an offensive slugfest broke out for the second game. UH won 7-4 with Jesse Moore (1-1) getting the win. Lenny Linsky got the save while Logan Todd (1-4) got the loss for the Hornets.

Van Doornum continued his hot hitting, going 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs. David Freitas was 3-for-3 with two runs while Kevin Fujii went 3-for-4 with one RBI. Kolten Wong was 2-for-4 with a run.

Sacramento State struck first, putting up three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Rainbows responded in the top of the second as Van Doornum hit a two-run homer, his second of the day, cutting it back to 3-2.

After another run by the Hornets got it to 4-2 in the bottom of the second, Hawai'i came up with a big, five-run, inning of their own in the top of the third. Van Doornum got it started, driving in Wong. Greg Garcia then hit a sacrifice fly to score Freitas before Collin Bennett hit a RBI-double, putting UH ahead 5-4. A single by Fujii then brought in Bennett with another Rainbow run coming in on a Hornet error, pushing the lead to 7-4.

From there, the relief pitching for both teams took over. Moore pitched 4.0 innings of shutout ball, allowing just four hits while Linsky came in to pitch a scoreless seventh inning and get the save.

The series closes tomorrow with a game at 1:00 p.m. (10 a.m. HST).
