Football Start Time Among Questions On Fan Survey

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Athletics Department conducted a survey at last season's football finale against Wisconsin, Dec. 5. Among the questions was a preference for the start time for future UH home football games.

Nearly 1,000 season-ticket holders and non-season-ticket holders participated in the survey. Thirty-eight percent of season-ticket holders chose 5:00 p.m. as their preferred start time, with 31 percent each selecting 5:30 or 6:00 p.m. kickoffs. Among non-season-ticket holders, 38 percent picked 5:30 p.m. as their preferred start time, compared to 31 percent each for 5:00 and 6:00 p.m.

Below are the results for the preferred start times with the seat locations of the respondents:

5:00 p.m. Kickoff:
Among season-ticket holders, 40 percent of those sitting in the Makai (ocean side) sideline preferred this time compared to 35 percent of those sitting in the Mauka (mountain side) sideline and 36 percent in the end zones. Fifty-five percent of non-season-ticket holders sitting on the Makai sideline picked this time slot compared to 24 percent of those sitting in the Mauka sideline and end zones.

5:30 p.m. Kickoff:
Season-ticket holders in all sections were nearly equal with 31 percent of Makai sideline, 33 percent of Mauka sideline, and 32 percent of end zone ticket holders picking this time slot. Among non-season-ticket holders, 28 percent of Makai and end zone ticket holders and 22 percent of Mauka sideline ticket holders preferred this time.

6:00 p.m. Kickoff:
Season-ticketholders on the Mauka sideline and end zones chose this time slot at a 32 percent rate, while Makai sideline ticket holders were at 29 percent. Non-season ticket holders in the Mauka (54 percent) and end zones (48 percent) were overwhelming in favor of this time, while only 17 percent of Makai sideline ticket holders chose this time.

UH Athletics Director Jim Donovan expects to announce a decision on the 2010 home game start time next week.
