HONOLULU – The No. 5 University of Hawai`i water polo team concluded its regular season with a 6-5 victory over sixth-ranked San Jose State on Saturday night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. The Rainbow Wahine improve to 16-6 overall, 4-3 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
The Spartans (16-11, 2-4 MPSF) went on a fast-paced 2-0 run to begin first quarter. Dani Curran and Bridget McKee scored for SJSU within the first three minutes of play. The Rainbow Wahine broke the Spartan's run after junior
Carmen Eggens scored UH's first goal on a six-on-five play.
With under two minutes left, Curran answered back for the Spartans to give SJSU a manageable 3-1 lead. UH took control with one minute left as
Carmen Eggens fired away again with a goal from 10-meters out. Senior
Dagmar Genee followed up with another goal with 0:19 seconds left to keep UH in the game, tying the score 3-3 to end the first.
Adriana Vogt began the second quarter with her first goal grabbing the lead back 4-3 for the Spartans. However,
Carmen Eggens muscled in another goal to tie the score again 4-4. With under one minute left, junior
Saara Majuri scored an extra-man goal, stealing the lead from the Spartans 5-4 into halftime.
The third quarter saw little action as both teams went scoreless throughout. The silence continued into the final quarter until half way in when Alyssa Schmidbauer tied the score 5-5 for SJSU with 3:20 left. Once UH got possession,
Carmen Eggens quickly took the lead back for the Rainbow Wahine, scoring her fourth goal to lead UH into a 6-5 victory over the Spartans.

Following the match, seniors
Ryan Hanson-Swaner and
Danielle Ingram were honored for their years of dedication and commitment to the program. They took their final swim in the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex before their teammates, coaches, families and fans.
Next for UH, the Rainbow Wahine head to the MPSF Championship in Los Angeles, Calif. hosted by
UCLA on Apr. 31-May 2.
