UH Hosts “Swim With Mike” Fundraiser At The DKAC

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i will be participating in “Swim with Mike” a fundraiser for the physically challenged athletes scholarship fund, on Saturday, April 24 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.

“Swim with Mike” began 30 years ago, to provide financial resources for advanced education that paves the way for physically challenged athletes to overcome personal tragedies and realize their full potential.

UH student-athletes will be participating in “Swim with Mike” and will include relay races, surf polo, diving, synchro and ocean swim.

In 2009-10, “Swim with Mike” has 42 current scholarships, with 34 universities represented.

Anyone can contribute to “Swim with Mike” through personal donations or by sponsoring Mike Nyeholt, a scholarship recipient or a swimmer of your choice. Previous participants have ranged from ages six-months to 80. Swimmers can swim anywhere and anytime.

Participation is not limited to “day of”. Swimmers obtain sponsors for the laps they swim. Runners, walkers, cyclists and others are welcome also.

“Swim with Mike” scholarship alumni are doctors, lawyers, teachers, actors, business owners and work in non-profits. Current recipients are doing cutting edge research in areas such as stem cells and clean energy production. Many recipients are active in elite level sports such as triathlon, marathon, tennis and outrigger canoe paddling.
