HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i men's basketball head coach Gib Arnold announced that guard Bo Barnes has signed a national letter of intent and will join the Rainbow Warriors this fall. Barnes will have four years of eligibility.

Barnes is a 6-4 shooting guard out of Westwind Prep International in Phoenix, Ariz. Barnes averaged 17.2 points and 7.0 rebounds per game in his one season at Westwind. He also averaged 3.3 assists and 2.3 steals per game. Westwind went 30-3 last season and advanced to the 2A state finals. After being recruited by a number of schools the last two years, Barnes ultimately chose UH over Iowa State.

“Bo is a true-student athlete,” Arnold said. “He's an outstanding basketball player with great range. Anyone who has seen Bo play is just amazed by how deep he can hit it. In addition, he's been exceptional in the classroom. He's carried a 3.8 grade point average and has already completed 20 units of college courses.”

Banes is the fourth recruit to sign with UH in the last week and fifth overall, joining 6-4 guard Jordan Coleman, 6-10 center Vander Joaquim, 6-7 forward Josten Thomas and 6-7 forward Trevor Wiseman.

Before attending Westwind, Barnes enjoyed a standout career at Scottsdale Christian. In 2008-09 at Scottsdale, Barnes averaged 19.2 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 3.2 apg. He was deadly accurate from the floor, shooting 60 percent from the field (220-367). Barnes drained 71 3-pointers on the season, hitting an astonishing 55 percent from beyond the arc. He scored in double-digits in all 31 games, including 36 points in the season finale.

Barnes led Scottsdale to a 28-3 record as a senior. He was the MVP of the Horizon Invitational, a holiday tournament Scottsdale Christian won by defeating three schools at least three classifications higher. Barnes earned all-region honors and was the league player of the year while at Scottsdale.

Arnold describes Barnes as “cowboy tough.” His father Jake is a professional rodeo champion who has competed for nearly three decades. Bo is also a standout roper.

“Bo is just a great kid,” Arnold said. “He comes from an athletic family and his mom has ties to Hawai'i and the Pacific having grown up on Midway Island. We're absolutely thrilled to have him join the program.”
