RUSTON, La. – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team (20-19, 3-7 WAC) fell to the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (20-17, 5-5) 9-5 at J.C. Love Field Friday.
Sam Spangler (2-6) took the loss for UH while Trevor Peterson (5-4) got the complete-game victory for Tech.
Jeffrey Van Doornum continued his hot hitting, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs.
David Freitas also homered while
Chase Koissian was 2-for-5 with one RBI.
Greg Garcia added one RBI and one run.
Louisiana Tech got on the scoreboard first, putting up a run in the bottom of the second. Koissian drove in Montplaisir in the top of the third to tie the score at 1-1. But the Bulldogs came right back, plating two in the bottom of the third, pushing to a 3-1 edge.
Garcia drove in Van Doornum in the top of the fourth to pull UH within a run at 3-2.
The Bulldogs scored another run in the bottom of the fifth to get it to 4-2. They looked to do more damage, but Bennett made a jumping catch at the centerfield wall, then doubled off a runner at first to disallow a runner coming in from third, keeping UH within two runs.
Van Doornum quickly made up some of the difference, hitting a solo home run to right in the top of the sixth. But La. Tech put up two more in the bottom of the inning, getting it to 6-3.
Louisiana Tech then added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh to get it to 9-3. Freitas hit a solo homer in the top of the eighth to cut it back to 9-4. Garcia would score a run in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn't enough as UH fell 9-5.
The series continues tomorrow with a game at 3 p.m. (10 a.m. HST).
