No. 23/25 Hawai‘i Defeats Nevada, 6-2

Box Score

RENO, Nev.—The 23/25th-ranked University of Hawai'i softball team (37-11, 15-0 WAC) defeated Nevada, 6-2. The 'Bows were led at the plate by Amanda Tauali'i's two home runs, while UH starting pitcher Kaia Parnaby (17-5, 5-0 WAC) held off the Wolf Pack (16-21, 3-9 WAC) for the win at Hixson Park.

Parnaby gave up two runs on seven hits. She struck out eight and walked none in her 15th complete game of the season.

The 'Bows scored first, posting two runs in the top of the second on Tauali'i's first two-run, opposite-field blast over the left-centerfield fence that drove in Kanani Pu'u-Warren, who had been hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.

Tauali'i struck again in the top of the fourth, with a drive that sailed over the left-centerfield fence for her second two-run homer of the game. Alex Aguirre scored on the play after she got beaned earlier in the inning. Tauali'i has now hit 14 homers on the year and has 31 in her career, moving her alone into fifth place in the UH career record book. She was tied for fifth with Dana Degen at 29 home runs.

Hawai'i added two more runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 6-0. Tauali'i led the inning off with a walk. After a line-out and a strike out, Jessica Iwata drilled a double to the left-centerfield gap, putting UH runners at second and third. Melissa Gonzalez then came through with an RBI single to rightfield, scoring pinch-runner, Tara Anguiano from third. Next, Jenna Rodriguez laced a single to leftfield, driving in Iwata from third.

Nevada would battle back in the bottom of the seventh. Kelsey Starr and Lauren Lastrapes hit back-to-back singles up the middle to start the inning. Sam Puzey then flew out to right, but the long fly ball allowed both runners to advance one base. Parnaby then got a swinging strike out for the inning's second out, but Amanda Nims got an RBI single up the middle to score Starr from third and break up the shut out. Kortnee Wiley followed with another single, to rightfield to drive in Lastrapes from third base. Parnaby then got Sam Bias to fly out to centerfield to end the game.

Nevada's Katie Holverson tossed a complete game, giving up six runs on 10 hits with five walks and eight strike outs.

Iwata's double in the sixth inning ties her with former UH All-American, Stacey Porter, for the UH single-season record for doubles at 18.

The two teams will conclude the three-game Western Athletic Conference series with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 1:00 p.m.
