HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team claimed a share of the Western Athletic Conference regular season championship with a 6-1 win over Idaho Sunday at the UH Tennis Complex. Both UH (10-7) and Fresno State finished with identical 4-1 conference records to become co-champions.
With the win UH also secured the top seed at the 2010 WAC Tournament. UH won the tie-breaker over Fresno State based on its 5-2 win over the Bulldogs earlier this season. The WAC Tournament begins Friday, April 30 in Fresno.
UH and Idaho (19-8, 2-4 WAC) originally met on Sunday, April 4 in Honolulu. In that match the Rainbow Warriors took a 3-0 lead and were tantalizingly close to the clinching deciding fourth point, but the match was ultimately halted due to rain. The two squads met again Sunday, starting from scratch and with nearly the same results.
The Rainbow Warriors claimed the doubles point then got singles wins from
Dennis Lajola,
Andreas Weber and
Dmytro Kovalyov, who claimed the deciding fourth point with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Alan Shin at the No. 6 court. With the team result already determined, the Rainbow Warriors won two of the remaining three matchups, with tough three-set wins by
Leo Rosenberg and
Jeremy Tweedt.
This is just the second year that the WAC has implemented a regular season for tennis and the Rainbow Warriors claimed its first WAC regular season title. UH will now seek its third straight tournament title when it heads up to Fresno State later this week. Both the Rainbow Warriors and Bulldogs will gain byes as the top two seeds and will begin play in the semifinals on Saturday, May 1.
